Temporal Change and Fishing Down Food Webs in Small-Scale Fisheries in Morondava, Madagascar

چکیده

Small-scale fisheries (SSFs) are often undervalued and unmanaged as a result of lack data. A study SSFs in Menabe, western Madagascar 1991 found diverse catches productive fishery with some evidence declining catches. Here we compare data collected at the same landing site 2011. 2011 had seven times greater total monthly landings due to more people fishing higher individual Catch composition showed lower mean trophic level indicating overfishing, true extent which may be masked changes technology behaviours. Limited management action since means these trends have likely continued an urgent need for both understanding, remains if they continue providing food income communities.

Fishing down marine food webs

The mean trophic level of the species groups reported in Food and Agricultural Organization global fisheries statistics declined from 1950 to 1994. This reflects a gradual transition in landings from long-lived, high trophic level, piscivorous bottom fish toward short-lived, low trophic level invertebrates and planktivorous pelagic fish. This effect, also found to be occurring in inland fisheri...

‘Fishing down marine food webs’ and spatial expansion of coastal fisheries in India, 1950–2000

The worldwide crisis of fisheries, which are usually managed on a single species basis, has led to calls for ‘ecosystem management’, along with he development of various ecosystem indicators. The Marine Trophic Index (MTI) and the related Fishing-in-Balance (FiB) index are two such ndicators, which can be used to draw inferences on the sustainability of fisheries, notably those targeting high-t...

Fishing down Marine Food Webs: an Update

One of the major ecosystem impacts offishing is the selective extirpation oflarge, long-lived fishes and their replacement in the ecosystem and in fisheries catches by small, short-lived fishes and invertebrates. As large fish tend to be top-predators, feeding on smaller' fishes while smaller fish and invertebrates feed on plankton and/or detritus, this process, recently shown to be operating g...

Commentary: Fishing Down Marine Food Webs

Most readers not already committed to the arcane practices of fish 'stock assessment' (the applied part of fisheries science) will probably assume that the subject matter covered by Ware is central to fisheries management. Strangely, this is not so: stock assessments are usually performed on the basis of trends in the catches of single species, and other fisheries-derived data, without referenc...

Fishing through marine food webs.

A recurring pattern of declining mean trophic level of fisheries landings, termed "fishing down the food web," is thought to be indicative of the serial replacement of high-trophic-level fisheries with less valuable, low-trophic-level fisheries as the former become depleted to economic extinction. An alternative to this view, that declining mean trophic levels indicate the serial addition of lo...
